Dark Comedy...

Six Shooter (2004)

Director : Martin McDonagh
Genre : Comedy, short film

Laughter is one of the essential parts of what keep our lives going. Without it, our lives would be dreadfully weary. That's one of the reasons why people like comedy. Nonetheless, being a human and possessing undeniable evil side in our nature, we sometimes find humor in others' pain and/or sorrow--what we define as the subject of "dark comedy."

The short clip we watched on Friday, Six Shooter, was one of the examples of dark comedy. I honestly can say that I did not find humor in that movie--other than the sheep part. Maybe it was because I was thinking too "psychologically" (about the boy and the possible causes why he ended up being a "retard") or because of my personality. I think I, too, find humor in some dark comedies sometimes, but this time I was just too disturbed to be amused.

It is very...cruel and sad that people find humor in others' pain/sorrow/whatever negative thing it may be. We laugh when we see someone tripping in the middle of the hallway, although we subconsciously know and/or think about how embarrassing it could have been if we ourselves were in that place. We get upset and sad and irritated when something bad happens to us but when someone else is also in that situation, we secretly find sinister joy. It is our nature, they say, and I find myself admitting and comforming to that theory of natural wickedness.

It's a sad, sad story.

***The title was probably named after the gun which the boy used to kill his mother and which the protagonist took later from the boy to commit a suicide.
