I noticed some techniques used in the movie to convey the tense atmosphere or the emotional tension that the protagonist (Sam) feels. For example, at the court, when Mr. Turner and Ms. Williams (Sam's lawyer) were having a hot dispute, the dutch/canted angle was used when capturing Sam's face to show that he was in a turmoil and agony because of the situation he was in. (I wish I could get the picture of that scene here...but I couldn't find it. =T)
*off-tangent: I realized that the movies give different impression when you know how they wre made and with what intentions the director used such techniques to portray that particular scene. Even if it might be a movie that I've seen before, when I did not pay so much attention to the technical meanings and workds behind the scenes but did focus on the scene itself, it still impresses me in a different level after having learned about the behind-scene "acts."
Another interesting thing I learned while I was doing a little research on movies is that the sound effects play a great role in forming the movie as a whole. In other words, not only do they need the background music to enhance the suspence, terror, shock or etc. but also the sound effects of certain objects--such as cars, trigger sound, and other miscellaneous subtle sounds-- are needed to convey or emphasize certain particular emotions or situations.
I'm really glad to have taken the Art of Film. Although I had a general sense of the intentions of the directors (because I just saw them and also because of my friend who was very much into directing and all), it's different to learn it and find it inside the movies and be amazed by it. I hope to learn more interesting things and enhance my enjoyment in movies! :]
